Renting in the city? Ontario Just got a new Standardized Lease

renting in Ontario new lease agreement

Renting in Ontario? There's a brand new, simplified standard lease that comes into effect April 30, 2018. Currently, there is no standard lease between landlords and tenants, which leaves a lot of room for confusion on rules, requests, and who's responsible for what. The new lease agreement is part of Ontario's plan to create more fairness and opportunity during economic changes. It also protects tenants from any illegal rules.

Who does this affect?

  • Landlords and tenants entering new lease agreements from April 30, 2018 onwards
  • Anyone renting in single and semi-detached houses, apartment buildings, rented condominiums, and secondary unities (i.e. basement apartments).

What's different?

  • It's easier to understand
  • It will be available in 23 languages
  • Landlords can't ban guests or pets
  • Landlords can't force tenants to pay a security deposit or use post-dated cheques
